Artificial intelligence is something many people probably never thought they’d see in their lifetime, but it has become the most prominent player in the technology industry. Every company, whether they like it or not, must now adapt to AI and be able to utilize it efficiently, or they will ultimately be left behind.

Artificial Intelligence and Accounting

It has become a very popular talking point that AI will eventually take over all accounting positions, but this is simply not true. Rather, artificial intelligence will help accounting firms enhance efficiency and reduce errors within accounting-related tasks.

The new technology unlocked with AI will be introduced to the newer generation of incoming staff in order to improve their critical thinking skills and their technical skills. AI will not take over future accounting positions for 2 reasons, the decision making involved requires human judgment and reasoning and accounting is a very client-oriented and trust-building profession.

As someone who will be joining the accounting profession, I am very excited to see how AI tools like ChatGPT will be utilized within my position. I am looking forward to learning how to harness the power of AI to increase productivity and improve results.

The Problem With Artificial Intelligence Tools

Although artificial intelligence can be used in a productive manner for those in the workforce, it does present a problem with individuals who are in school. Simply put, AI tools like ChatGPT can act as a shortcut to an answer, eliminating an individual’s need for problem-solving and thus disrupting the learning process.

Elementary and middle school is where those problem-solving and critical thinking abilities are forged. If children have access to an AI tool that can simply pop out an answer to any question (regardless of subject), their problem solving skills will undoubtedly decline.

The way I see it, young children who abuse AI tools for school-related purposes will struggle in the future (high school, college, graduate school, career) as they will not have the proper skills and mindset to solve more complex problems.

This article dives deeper into how AI is affecting the accounting industry!
